With the eventual phase-out of this seminal Puerto Rican popular group's music in the LP format, all of their known singles are being reissued on CD. Bandleader/percussionist Rafael Cortijo, improvisational singer Ismael Rivera, and arranger/trumpet ace Rogelio "Kito" Vélez have never been better (this combination remains unmatched in magnetism) as the band's ebullient, intoxicating style has remained fresh, after nearly half a century. Even more remarkable, the band brought forth successfully the island's national rhythms as an antidote to the highly dominant Cuban musical scene. Essential music. Simply said, Puerto Rican popular music history cannot be written without these giants. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr., All Music Guide
